Wheelchair Basketball (Beginner)

A girl dribbles the ball during a wheelchair basketball game.

Discover the game. Build confidence. Belong.

The Abilities Centre Wheelchair Basketball Beginner Program is designed for individuals of all abilities who are ready to try a new sport in a supportive, barrier-free environment. Whether you are new to wheelchair basketball or new to using a sport chair, this program builds foundational skills while fostering confidence and community connection.

Developed in collaboration with community champion and former wheelchair basketball coach Michael Frogley, this program focuses on the whole person, not just athletic ability, guided by three core pillars: Respect, Perseverance, and Being a Good Teammate.

Participants will learn basic sport wheelchair mobility and control, core wheelchair basketball skills including passing, shooting, and positioning, and game awareness through fun, structured activities. All equipment is provided, ensuring equitable access for everyone. Participants will also be introduced to optional development opportunities including local tournaments hosted at Abilities Centre and across Ontario.

Anyone ages 7 and up who wants to try wheelchair basketball in a welcoming, inclusive environment in Whitby, Ontario. No prior experience is required. All abilities welcome.
