A community-based exercise program for people living with cardiac or pulmonary conditions delivered in partnership with Lung Health Foundation.
Respiratory and Cardiac Maintenance (RCM) is a community-based exercise program at Abilities Centre developed in partnership with Lung Health Foundation. RCM is designed for people living with cardiac or pulmonary conditions including heart attack, angina, COPD, and Pulmonary Fibrosis who have already completed a formal cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation program and are ready to maintain their progress in a community setting.
RCM focuses on helping participants maintain muscular strength, flexibility, and the physical capacity to manage everyday activities with confidence. The goal is ongoing symptom management and long-term well-being.
Who is RCM for?
RCM is for adults in Durham Region who have completed a cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation program and are looking for a structured, community-based exercise program in Whitby, Ontario to help them maintain their health and independence. A physician referral is required to enrol.
When do classes run?
RCM runs year-round at Abilities Centre in Whitby, Ontario, in three-month session blocks. Classes are held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

1. Get a referral.
A referral from your physician is required before you can enrol in RCM. Download the RCM referral form, have it completed and signed, and submit it by fax, email, or in person at our front desk.
2. Complete your intake assessment.
Once your referral is received, our Post-Rehabilitation coordinator will contact you to schedule a 15 to 20 minute intake appointment. This includes a health screening questionnaire to ensure the program is the right fit for you.
3. Join the program.
Once your intake is complete, you are ready to start. RCM runs all year round, so there is always an opportunity to get started. You can remain in the program for as long as you are able to participate.
