Disability Inclusion Workshop

Change Starts With Understanding.

Most people want to be more inclusive. But wanting inclusion and knowing how to create it are two very different things. Assumptions go unexamined. Language choices feel uncertain. The barriers that limit participation for people with disabilities often go unnoticed by those who have never experienced them firsthand.

The Disability Inclusion Workshop at Abilities Centre is designed to close that gap.

This engaging, interactive workshop gives participants the platform to reflect honestly on their own knowledge of inclusion, examine the assumptions and biases that shape how we see disability, and walk away with practical, tangible strategies they can apply in their professional and personal lives right away.

What the Workshop Covers

The Disability Inclusion Workshop takes an introductory but substantive approach to inclusion, grounded in real conversation, shared experience, and evidence-based best practice. Participants explore:

  • Assumptions and biases: examining the unconscious beliefs that shape how we interact with and design for people with disabilities
  • Language: understanding the power of words, what to say, what to avoid, and why it matters
  • Models of disability: moving beyond outdated frameworks to understand disability in a way that centers the whole person
  • Removing barriers to participation: exploring how programs, services, spaces, and activities can be designed so that everyone can take part

The workshop is designed to generate genuine conversation, not just deliver information. Participants share examples and experiences, challenge their own thinking, and build a deeper, more nuanced understanding of what inclusion actually looks and feels like in practice.

What Participants Take Away Every participant leaves the Disability Inclusion Workshop with:
  • A clearer, more confident understanding of disability inclusion and what it means in everyday contexts
  • Practical strategies for breaking down stigma and removing barriers in their own environment
  • Language tools and frameworks they can apply immediately in professional and personal settings
  • A stronger sense of how they personally can contribute to their organization's journey toward a more inclusive community

The learning does not stay in the room. It goes back to workplaces, schools, recreation programs, and communities across Ontario.
