HUR Room at Abilities Centre

About This Program

The world’s largest installation of HUR adaptive fitness and rehabilitation equipment, open to members of all ages and abilities.

Strength training reimagined.

At Abilities Centre, we believe that access to high-quality fitness equipment should never be limited by age, ability, or fitness level. The HUR Room makes that belief a reality.

Abilities Centre is home to the world’s largest installation of Helsinki University Research (HUR) fitness and rehabilitation equipment, a distinction that reflects our commitment to offering members something genuinely different from any other fitness facility in Canada. Designed with full accessibility at its core, the HUR Room provides a joint-friendly, evidence-informed workout environment that works for everyone, from first-time exercisers and older adults to post-rehabilitation participants and high-

What is our HUR Room?

What makes HUR different?

Traditional weight-based equipment was not designed with everyone in mind. Heavy stacks, fixed ranges of motion, and awkward entry points create barriers for people with disabilities, older adults, and anyone returning to fitness after an injury or illness.

HUR equipment removes those barriers entirely.

Air resistance technology

HUR uses pneumatic air resistance instead of traditional weight stacks. This means resistance matches your natural muscle movement throughout the full range of motion, reducing joint stress and making every exercise feel more natural, more controlled, and more effective. It is a smarter way to build strength.

Fully accessible design

The HUR Room at Abilities Centre features a spacious, open layout inside modern glass walls, designed for easy, comfortable navigation by wheelchair users, adaptive athletes, older adults, and anyone who finds traditional gym equipment difficult to use. There are no barriers to entry, literally or figuratively.

Real-time smart tracking

Every HUR machine uses smart technology to measure, monitor, and adjust resistance and performance data in real time. Your workouts are tracked automatically, giving you and your support team clear, accurate data on your progress over time. This makes the HUR Room as valuable for rehabilitation and clinical programming as it is for general fitness and performance.

Versatile for every goal

The HUR Room supports a wide range of fitness and wellness goals, including:

  • General strength training and conditioning for all fitness levels.
  • Functional movement and mobility for everyday life.
  • Post-rehabilitation recovery and physical therapy support.
